ABBA

People need hope, people need loving

People need trust from a fellow man

People need love to make a good living

People need faith and a helping hand

Man has always wanted a woman by his side to keep him company

Women always knew that it takes a man to get matrimonial harmony

Everybody knows that a man who's feeling down wants some female sympathy

Gotta have love to carry on livingGotta have love 'till eternity

People need hope, people need loving

People need trust from a fellow man

People need love to make a good living

People need faith in a helping hand

La la la la, la la la la-la, la la la la la la la-la la laa...

Flowers in a desert need a drop of rain like a woman needs her man

If a man's in love and his woman wants the moon

Then he'll take it down if he can

Somebody who loves you and somebody who caresIsn't that what you call a friend?

Gotta have love to carry on living

Isn't it easy to understand

People need hope, people need loving

People need trust from a fellow man

People need love to make a good living

People need faith in a helping hand

La la la la, la la la la-la, la la la la la la la-la la la

La la la la, la la la la-la, la la la la la la la-la la laa...

Verdict

The verdict of 2009 General Elections shows that Indian voters have really come of age. The message is clear that they can no longer be taken for a ride as some politicians have long assumed. During the past two months of 'election season', it was well evident from the internet-chat-rooms and message-boards that many voters, particularly the youth, were not happy with many of our politicians. They are fed up with the old-fashioned politics of machiavellian-tricks and chanakya-tantras. The need of the time is a politics of honesty, integrity, transparency and accountability.
The ascendance of Rahul Gandhi gives them a renewed hope. He was instrumental in the resurgance of Congress party in the North and among the youth. He energized his cadres, giving them a new vitality and getting rid off the old complacency. But there are a few critics who highlights his inexperience, naivity and even shyness as a drawback in politics. Another group who blames it on 'dynastic-politics'. But infact, when it comes to areas that concerns with power - ie. business & politics - dynastic succession is a blessing. And it is Rahul's naivity and shyness that sets him apart and makes him particularly appealing to the youth. They thinks that he is one of them.
Another hallmark of this election was the drubbing of Left and Rightwing parties. With their aging leaders, these parties were unable to keep track with the changes of the times. They are still clinging to their out-dated ideologies, which has originated in Europe where they themselves have discarded it.They failed to realise that in this 21-st century, even a child is well aware of his/her rights and hates talking down to. On the other hand, Gandhian ideals and principles are increasingly gaining acceptance world wide.

mango

Being in the tropics, my own region (Kerala) has its share of flora & fauna. The fruits produced in our region are mango, pinapple, banana, gauva, coconut, cashew-fruit, jack-fruit ,papaya - just to name the few! My favourite fruit apple ofcourse does not feature in them. But one could hardly imagine having apples at the height of summer. I believe in having something that nature naturally gives you.
Mango is the king of fruits as far as my region is concerned. It dominates the market in most part of the year - from March to September. And during the peak season, a vareity of mangoes of all shapes and sizes floods to the market. They influence the local cuisine too. The raw-mango added fish-curry is a popular one. So is mango-curry itself, but with a sweet & sour taste. Mango-pickles,mango-lassi,mango-halwa,mango-icecream are other specialities.
To beat the heat, I mix mango-slices along with pappaya, orange, banana to make a salad and top it with ice-cream, preferably butterscotch. I am not including any recipes here as I am still at an 'experimental-stage'. I like to experiment with various deserts, shakes and cocktails. Perhaps I got the habit from my stay in Malaysia. They are great experimenters with their cuisine. Besides, our family are traditionally bakers.I would like include recipe of a very easy-to-make pudding - a sort of 'pudding for dummies': Take slices of plum-cake and desolve into the desert-bowl. Then add ice-cream and mix it with a spoon. There you have it ! A wonderfull, instant pudding !

Feroz Khan

Feroz Khan (1939-2009): The Bollywood Baron from Bangalore.

The eminent actor-filmmaker Feroz Khan died after a prolonged illness at his private farm-house in Bangalore. He was 70. Also known as 'debonair-Khan' or 'casanova-Khan',(some prefer to call him the 'Indian Clint Eastwood') he carved a permanent niche in the film-industry both as a filmmaker and as an actor with a larger-than-life persona. There are indeed many 'Khans' in Bollywood, but Feroz Khan was of real Pathan stock.
Born in 1939 in Bangalore in a well-to-do business family, he left for Mumbai to pursue a career in the films. He did a few smaller roles before lauching himself as a producer, director and hero. A keen follower of world trends than the local ones, he went on to become a trend-setter in Bollywood. He combined his in-born business acumen with artistic talent to make a host of commercially successfull movies.
Feroz Khan is one of the few Bollywood filmmakers who prefered quality to quantity. In a career that span over four decades, he made only a handfull of movies. But each one had a distinctive Feroz Khan signature on it. He made action movies with a racy narrative, fast-editing,crisp-dialogues and sleek camera-works that mesmerized the audience. As an actor he knew his limitations well but he overcame them with creating his own style. He was perfectly at ease with handling a gun or riding a horse or driving a SUV. He set the trend of aspirational films in Bollywood that depicted 'what it should be' than 'what it is'. Clearly Feroz Khan was a filmmaker well ahead of his times.

Khan's movies were like a Harold Robbins pulp-fiction novel. His lead-charachters led a fast life, amidst sports cars, race-horses,stud-farms,bikes,discotheques,barbeques,billiard-tables, private-jets and other gizmos & gadgets. Unlike a typical Bollywood pot-boiler.he did not overcrowd his frames with people. Whether the characters or dialogue he always looked for what to exclude than what to include. In that sense Khan was a thorough minimalist by Bollywood standards. The same could be said about the costumes of many of his heroines too.

True to his on-the-screen personna , in real life too he lived life flamboyantly. The stories of his own playboy life-style was a regular feature in film-magazines of the times. There are many stories and anecdotes prevelent of his hobnobbing with the rich and famous. One such story was during the making of Apradh (1972) in Germany, the initial phase of shooting ran into rough weather with many obstacles. Then a chance meeting with a royal family member in Saxony (who later became his close family-friend) the rest of shooting went smooth and the crew enjoyed special privilages. Similar problem occured during the making of Dharmatma(1975) in Afghanistan, when the government was toppled by the rebels and the shooting had to be discontinued . But both the factions sent a message to the Khan, ensuring him that his film-making will not be affected.
A lover of horses, he was frequent in the racing circuit. His last major appearence was on MTV a few years ago to recieve the MTV style-icon award.
Keeping with the feudal tradition of Bollywood, his son Fardeen is also an actor, trying to cash in father's popularity and success, but so far largerly in vain.
List of Feroz Khan movies:
1) Apradh(1972)
2) Dharmatma(1975)
3) Qurbani(1980)
4) Jaanbaaz(1986)
5) Yalgaar(1992)
6) Prem Aggan(1998)
7) Janasheen(2003)
