Shreya Ghoshal - tribute to Salilda : ni sa ga ma pa ni sa re ga ..

ga ga re pakhi ga..[2006 Bengali]
(sing sing o' bird sing...)
singer : Shreya Ghoshal
music  : Salil Chowdhury
lyrics   : Salil Chowdhury

This is the kind of song only a classicaly trained singer can sing correctly. The prodigy-turned-diva Shreya Ghoshal sings it with ease and perfection - even better than the original! If only Salilda was alive to hear this brilliant tribute !

I am a big fan the cute & talented Shreya but I've not been a big fan of cover-versions. Yet after listening to Shreya's cover of various old-hits, I've changed my mind. Indeed, if the singers and musicians can do full justice to the original, then cover-versions are delight to hear.

Just imagine Shreya Ghoshal covering all those Golden-hits of yesteryears - mostly sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt and others - I'm sure they will sell like hot-cakes ! Alas, nothing much can be expected from the current crop of music-makers to fully utilize the talent of Shreya. So she often had to content with songs like Oh la la...You are my fantasy !

In this time of 'mass production' of singers & musicians (due to the onslaught of Realty music-shows) there are still a few precious gems in the vast sea of mediocrity. Certainly, Shreya Ghoshal is currently one of the best female singers in the world ! While listening to her divine, God-gifted talent, you feel as if ever since she's born, she did nothing else but sing, sing and sing !

Happy Birthday Salil-da ! (Nov. 19th )

Raju Bharatan, well-known music & sports critic meets the versatile genius Salil Chowdhury :
Salil Chowdhury :  composer  extraordinaire
For Salil, humility was never a mask he wore to underscore his talent.

"The game of football has its set rules, yet along comes a player who, even while performing within those rules, is not quite bound by them. His is the touch of genius. I'm speaking of Pele. And I, Salil Chowdhury, am the Pele of music !"

Salil always came up with the unexpected in the notes he struck.Harmony was the keynote of his music, yet it was a problem pinning him down, such was his erudition, extending from art to literature to music. His imagination took wing even while we were focussed on what, for me , was a crucial musical point.Remarkably ordered in the music room, he was amazingly disorganised in real life. An appointment with him meant nothing. You had to track him down. Once you did so, you were rewarded with musical insights that made you discern that no one, even from Bengal, had brought to the art of scoring the creative impulses this little wizard did. " If you were the first symphonic composer in our music, why in heaven's name," I asked, " didn't  you take your art to the West for evaluation ?"

"But who are they to judge us ?" riposted Salil characteristically. "It may be true I have been inspired by the best of the West. By the best of the West - where other music-makers of your Bombay are driven by the worst of the West. But no one, just no one , in the East or West, do I grant the liberty of judging my creativity. I, as total musician, have a total comprehension of the true intrinsic value of my own work."

As the son of a forest officer based in Assam, Salil Chowdhury was privileged to be exposed to the Western masters, ranging from Beethoven to Bach to Brecht, in his impressionable years. "My father," observed Salil, " was a connoisseur of the finest in Western music. He was playing it all the time and I was listening."
Salil proved to be a listener with a photographic mind. "My father's being stationed in the forests of Assam" revealed Salil, "resulted in my being exposed early to the verdant vibrancy of the music of that region. It was here I developed my passion for delving into our folk forms and norms. When Bimal Roy, therefore, invited me to score the music for Madhumati(1958 ) ,I knew the theme to be right up my alley."

Hemanta Mukherjee : the Golden Voice

ami jhorer kache rekhe gelam [1961 Bengali]
(I left my whereabouts in the storm...)
Singer- Hemanta Mukherjee
Lyrics- Salil Chowdhury
Music- Salil Chowdhury

Hemanta Mukherjee (also known as Hemant Kumar in Hindi film/music scene) is well-known for his brilliant compositions in Hindi-films like Bees Saal Baad(1962) Kohra(1964) and Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam(1962). As a composer, he was not very prolific, but each one of them were a gem. Hemant-da clearly had a talent for composing music with an ethereal quality. Perhaps that's why he composed  mostly in noir/thriller/horror
movies. His music can be at best enjoyed in the chilly weather of the rainy season or at a hill-station.(And if   you catches a cold, you may even imitate his brooding baritone voice!)

Hemant-da was more prolific as a singer, his baritone voice and singing style perfectly suits romantic and sentimental numbers. Almost every  Hindi/Bengali composer of  yesteryears have used his renditions. In Bengal, he also renowned for his extensive work in Rabindra Sangeet(Tagore-music). He also teamed up with another legend Salil Chowdhury to create many evergreen hits - such as this song ami jharer kache.

Hemant-da was apolitical (like me) but not Salil-da. Besides being a great composer, Salil-da was an ardent communist. Through his music, poems and lyrics, Salil-da always aligned himself with the oppressed and down-trodden of that time. He was also influenced by 'socialist realism' of the erstwhile Soviet Union and Eastern bloc countries. Apart from Bengal, Salil-da was very prolific in Kerala where he created many hits and revered as an iconic figure. And from his stable came another legend - the genius of Ilaiyaraja !

Salil-da composes folk and (Indian) classical music aided by western orchestration. He frequently used counter-point technique (including this song). Certainly, if there is any musician after Tagore who gave Bengal its own music-idiom, it is Salil Chowdhury.

Alisha Chinai/Bappi Lahiri

song : yaar mera khogaya, pyaar mera khogaya
(my friend's gone, my love's gone!)
singer : Alisha Chinai
music : Bappi Lahiri
lyrics : Anjaan
album : Dance Dance [1987 Hindi movie]

produced & directed by : B.Subhash

Trivia : Bappi-da has always worked with new artists and talents. Alisha Chinai whom he introduced in the mid-80s became a big star in the 90s.
Bappi-da may not be in the same league as maestros like R.D Burman or Ilaiyaraaja, nor has he created many authentic classics. But Bappi-da is the first Indian musician to project an image and life-style through his music. With his lively disco beats as well as his flamboyant appearence, Bappi-da gives this message : be merry & enjoy life !

Bappi Lahiri & Shreya Ghoshal - the' Golden' connection

Disco-king Bappi Lahiri and Shreya Ghoshal came together recently to promote the music of 'The Dirty Picture' in which they sang the hit track 'Ooh La La - tu hai meri fantasy'(you are my fantasy).
What does Bappi Lahiri and Shreya Ghoshal have in common ? Ofcourse, they are successfull musicians and they are Bengalis. And they have many hits to their credit that has turned 'Gold'.And further more they have the 'Golden connection' - literally !

Bappi-da (as Bappi Lahiri is affectionately known -which means 'Brother Bappi' in Bengali) is synonymous with gold - whether his lively disco-music or his sparkling, flamboyant attires.Infact, Bappi-da's habit of wearing flashy clothes and gold chains is inspired by his childhood hero - Elvis Presley.

Shreya Ghoshal is the most talented and cuttest of new female-singers. Is she fond of wearing jewelleries like Bappi-da - we don't know. But certainly she is often seen now-a-days in TV-ad and billboards, being the brand ambassador of a renowned jewellery group. As the saying goes -like master, like disciple !

'Ga Ga' Lady

(photo - Washington Post)
Lady GaGa has dominated the MTV Europe Music Awards this week, winning the best song, best female-artist ,best video and special award for the artsit with largest fan circle. Also known for her neo-burlesque persona & attire, she gave a scintillating stage performance at the venue in Belfast.
Prior to this event, Lady GaGa toured India where she is seen sipping tea (above) during the press conference. She had an interesting revelation to make for her Indian admirers. She said that in Hindi the word 'Ga' means 'to sing'. So her name GaGa - ie. 'to sing-sing' will be specially make her appealing in India. As for hosts, it was a welcome change , especially for a nation where entertainment of 1.2 billion hapless souls are firmly in the hands of one or two Bollywood families and a few cricketers.

Amy Winehouse joins Club 27

Here goes another meteor ! .... Not only in her looks, in her real life too, Amy Winehouse lived very much in the 'spirits' of 60s & 70s.

I am not a fan of her nor I am familiar with her music. From the few tracks I have so far heard here and there, Amy Winehouse is a singer & song-writer of considerable talent. But I always liked her for being different, with her devil-may-care attitude. At a time when even an occational bath-room singer can become an 'idol' or an 'icon' by gate-crashing into some venues of reality TV-shows, and claiming thousands of fans & followers instantly, Amy Winehouse was a throw-back to the bygone era. An era where art and creativity were pursued with unique craze & passion, even leading to self-destruction.

Amy Winehouse too lived on the edge, choosing a lonely, risky and self-destructive path. Music world has lost a great talent. May her soul rest in peace.

GYPSY KINGS

Makes A Comeback

lyrics of "Bamboleo" :

Ese amor llega así de esta manera
no tiene la culpa, caballo de danza vana
porque es muy despreciado por eso
no te perdona llorar
ese amor llega así esta manera
no tiene la culpa
amor de compra y venta
amor en el pasado.

Bembele bembele
bembelebem bembele bembele
Bamboleo bambolea

No te encuentro l'abandon.
Eres imposible no te encuentro de verdad
Por eso un día no cuento si de nada
Lo mismo ya que ayer,
Lo pienso en ti

Harmony & discord :

in music and in nature

An year long festivities, exhibitions and cultural programmes have been inaugurated in Bengal to mark the 150-th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. Continueing with my posts of Tagore's Selected Letters, the great polymath who invented Bengal's own music idiom - 'Rabindra-sangeet'- compares the distinctive styles of Indian music and European music. The Letters are written while touring to his family-estates as a manager, living in his house-boat off the Padma river.

Shelidah (Bangladesh)
10 August 1894

Last night the river woke me with a violent bubbling that made the boat billow in the swell - probably the inrush of a freshet: a thing that happens almost daily in this season. As I sat listening I suddenly had the impression that the whole river was alive and highly agitated. Through the planks at my feet I could clearly sense the gamut of ceaseless movement below : tremors, quakes, upheave and downturn, as if I were taking the river's palpitating pulse. The disturbance must have been quite something to set the water racing so wildly.

For a long time I sat on a bench beside the window. Outside was a hazy light that made the excited river look even madder. The sky was spotted with clouds. The reflection of a particularly bright star glimmered on the waters like a gash of agony. Both banks were dim and drowsy with slumber but between them surged an insomniac restlessness.

The day-world calls to mind European music with its various concords and discords, orchestrated into a great, purposeful ensemble. And the night-world is like the sphere of Indian music with its unadulterated melody, sombre and poignant. Both move us, though they are in striking contrast. And why should they disturb us ? Pairs of opposites lie at the very root of creation : king and queen, night and day, unity and disunity, the eternal and the evolving.

We Indians are under the rule of night; we are besotted with the eternal, the One. Our melodies are intended for the solitary individual; European music is for the multitude. Our music removes us from the domain of everyday joys and sorrows to a region devoid of company, as aloof as the universe ; the music of Europe revels in the perpetual oscillations of the human condition.

BAPPI LAHIRI

Presents : 'Football Fever'
Apart from Vuvuzela, one of the highlights of WorldCup-2010, has been the official FIFA theme song Shakira's 'Waka Waka'. The song and the video has been an instant-hit all over the world. Also popular is another theme-song 'Waving Flag' by K'naan. Inspired by the soccer-craze, the King of Indian Disco -Bappi Lahiri - popularly known as 'Bappi-da' (ie. Brother-Bappi) came up with his own take on the beautiful game. The single is titled 'Football Fever' sung by Bappi Lahiri himself.
Being a Bengali, there is no doubting Bappi-da's credentials as a passionate soccer-fan. After all, the pioneer football-clubs like East Bengal and Mohun Bagan are in his home-land. So football fever must be always in his vains. Hasn't Salil Chowdhury, the Bengali music-legend once said (in a lighter vain) ' I'm the Pele of music' ? Another great Bengali-composer - S.D Burman too was an ardent soccer fan.

And when it comes to getting inspired, there's no match for Bappi-da either. His 'inspired' works of world-famous disco-hits has earned him the nick-name 'Copy-Lahiri'. Some would also call him the Kitsch-King of Disco. But unlike some of his counterparts, Bappi-da readily admits that he has lifted tunes from others. He adds that even in his lifted-tunes, he gives a unique Bappi-da touch. Nowadays Bappi-da is more prolific as a music reality-show judge than as a musician. But advancing years have not dimished his love for good food or his trademark of flashy clothes, expensive jewellary, and designer sun-glasses that hide his Mongolian eyes.

Bappi-da's 'Football Fever' video is available on YouTube. It hasn't caused any ripple in the market (unlike his hit-numbers of the 80's).The comments that posted below the video speaks for itself. It's not that Bappi-da is unused to such heavy shower of brick-bats. I am giving here a link to the video - (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMR7zl-xuAI) out of deep respect for a musician -whom I'd call - the pioneer figure of Indian pop-music scene. Like him or poke fun of him : one cannot simply ignore this large, flamboyant man. We love you Bappi-da !

For the very best of Bappi Da's video see : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTMu1c2xaLA&feature=related (Chalo Chale : Bappi Lahiri & Runa laila)

Eagle lyrics
They came flying from far away, now I'm under their spell
I love hearing the stories that they tell
They've seen places beyond my land and they've found new horizons
They speak strangely but I understand
And I dream I'm an eagle
And I dream I can spread my wings
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please
As all good friends we talk all night, and we fly wing to wing
I have questions and they know everything
There's no limit to what I feel, we climb higher and higher
Am I dreaming or is it all real?
Is it true I'm an eagle?
Is it true I can spread my wings?
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
(I'm an eagle)
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
(What a feeling)
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please
And I dream I'm an eagle
And I dream I can spread my wings
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
(I'm an eagle)
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
(What a feeling)
Over mountains and forests and seas
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
(I'm an eagle)
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
(What a feeling)
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please..

BeeGees

Too Much Heaven
(chorus)Nobody gets too much heaven no more

It's much harder to come by

I'm waiting in line

Nobody gets too much love anymore

It's as high as a mountainAnd harder to climb

Oh you and me girl

Got a lot of love in store

And it flows through you

And it flows through me

And I love you so much more

Then my life, I can see beyond forever

Everything we are will never die

Love is such a beautiful thing

Oh you make my world a summer day

Are you just a dream to fade away?(chorus)

Ooh you and me girl got a highway to the sky

We can turn away from the night and day

And the tears we had to pay

You're my life I can see a new tomorrow

Everything we are will never die

Love is such a beautiful thing

When you are to me, the light above

Made for all to see our precious love

(chorus)Love is such a beautiful thing

You make my world a summer day

Are you just a dream to fade away?

(chorus)Nobody gets too much love anymore

Its as wide as a river and harder to cross(chorus)

(repeat to fade)

POP-ICON

For all these years, I have enjoyed music and performances of Michael Jackson but cared little about his personnel details. Now his untimely death and the subsequent media-frenzy has enabled me to know more about the enigmatic star. For instance I did not know that he was a virgo. Like all virgos, he's sensitive, sympathetic and sensual. But for a true music-lover his creative outpour that mattered the most. As for those interested more on his personnel life,it is their problem. And more enigmatic and reclusive the star, more the media scrutiny. MJ was very much a product of his times- the rebellious 70-s and it is unlikely that the current generation could easily identify with his life's struggles.

I discovered MJ rather late - ie. during the teen-years. Many fans have been saying the past week or so, 'I grew up with Michael Jackson's music' . The same cannot be said in my case. For me ABBA and to some extent Boney-M fills that place. But to compare a music-troupe like ABBA with the one-man troupe of Michael Jackson (except his early years) will be unfair. The former held its sway only for a decade while the later's career was stretched overa span of 4-decades. MJ was a prodigy who started early (and burned out early).Michael Jackson's style of music - a blend of rock, pop and R&B -refuse to become out-dated.Many music-styles have come and gone but MJ's style always with stood the test of times.
In the early 80's,I had only vague memories of his super-hit 'Thriller'. By mid 80's I became familiar with some of those hits but still did not know the singer. And finally I got familiar with his name, I often confuse it with another Michael - ie. George Michael who was also equally popular. Then came out the album 'Bad'(1987). My friend went ga-ga over it and even gave me its audio-cassette to listen for a few days. I liked it and even got it recorded into my tape (which I still have with me). Thus begin my love-affair with the king of pop.. Next year, he recieved the Grammy and also gave some memorable stage performances, which I watched live on TV. I remember my father then asking me,'who is she ?'
The same year I came across the lyrics of 'Bad' album in a magazine. On the top of it was clearly written,' lyrics by Michael Jackson'. Then only I knew that MJ wrote almost all his lyrics and even composed it himself. Now I looked at him as more than a singer and performer. For someone who used to the standard bollywood custom where lyrics, composition, singing, choregraphy, performing all are done by different hand-picked individualS, Michael Jackson's was truly a one-man show ! And what a spectacular show those were !
Now his show has finally come to an end. The star has vanished. It ended the way he staged it - enigmatically and mysteriouslly. It was like a broadway-show that conducted uninterruptedly for many years, mesmerising the audiences and finally calls it a day. As the curtain comes down, what remains is a retrospective of old moments -thanks to the media. But it will not late while the audience realise with regret that all good things come to an end. Still some allege that his creative powers are only the out-come of drug-abuse which is baseless. The vice-versa is more true though drug-abuse is hardly a justification. MJ was many things roled into one which needed a super-human effort to sustain. Perhaps he took the wrong route.
Even the harshest critics will agree that Mike Tyson, despite his madness on and off the ring, is one of the greatest boxers of all time. Similarly, despite all his eccentricities Michael Jackson ,for a long time to come, will remain the undisptuted 'King of pop' .
